What is Merlot?

Merlot (pronounced Mer-low) is a versatile grape that is used to produce some of the world's most popular red wines. It can be rich and complex or juicy and fruity depending on how it is grown and can be a great option for an easy drinking wine.

We've put together a little guide to help you understand this wonderful grape variety and find the right bottle for you.

What does Merlot taste like?

Merlot is a grape that is often associated with Cabernet Sauvignon because of how well they blend together, however Merlot red wine is mellower with lower tannins, softer acidity, and generally a lighter body, with tasting notes of:

Plums, Blackberries, Black Cherries, Cocoa, Cloves

Where it is grown can have a large effect on the wine it produces. The grape shows juicier, fruity notes in warmer climates, with higher alcohol. In cooler climates however, Merlot can have more structure with grippy tannins and herbaceous, peppery notes.

Where does it come from?

You will find it in lots of wines from Bordeaux, particularly those from the right bank of the river Gironde where it shines as the dominant grape often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Look to Chile if you’re after something juicy & fruity.

France - Bordeaux | USA - California | Chile - Colchaugua Valley | Australia - South Australia

Where should I start with Merlot?

There are some great value wines that offer juicy, fruity examples of this grape. Our best selling easy drinker is great value Chilean wine. Or if you want to try a more structured wine that will suit a Sunday dinner go for a Bordeaux.
