Carménère - This grape originates from Chile and has in the past been confused for Merlot. Wine made using Carmenere tend to have a deep ruby color and a complex aroma of red fruits, spices, and chocolate. Carmenere wine can be smooth and velvety on the palate, with a long and satisfying finish. It pairs well with grilled meats, pasta dishes, and cheese.
Merlot - A key grape in France's Bordeaux region, it also thrives in Chile where it produces mellow reds full of plummy, cherry fruit and smoky cocoa spice.
Cabernet Sauvignon - among the most widely planted grapes in Chile it produces wines full of black cherry, blackberry fruit with a hints of dark chocolate and herbal depth of flavour. The best examples are rich and full-bodied and pair well with most red meats.
Pinot Noir - grown mostly in the Coastal regions where sea breezes help cool the vineyards. Chilean Pinot Noir can be great value and offer a bright, light, fruity, low-tannin wines often with blueberry, cherry and plum flavours along with toasty oak from time spent in wood.
Chardonnay - there are lots of ripe, tropical buttery examples of Chardonnay to be found in Chile from Casabalanca but the most elegant balanced styles with more minerality can be found in the Limari Valley or cooler Costa areas.
Sauvignon Blanc - Chilean Sauvignon Blanc has some of the ripe fruit character of New Zealand Sauvignon with grapefruit, peach and lime, but is less intense and often has more herbal cut grass or green pepper aromas and flavours too.
