Tasted September 2009

I first tasted this at a tasting a year ago, and whilst it was very good, we had quite a bit of red Loire on the shelves. That's all gone now, clearing the way for this superb wine. Yannick took over his family domaine at the tender age of 22 in 1977 and has come to be respected as one of the finest producers of red wine in the Loire Valley. Most of his wines are 'lieu-dits', or single site wines, and the vineyards are scattered all over the region. Les Quartiers is one of the finest.
Tasted September 2009

Grape Variety: 100% Cabernet Franc

Region: Bourgueil, Loire Valley

Soil Type: The 'Les Quartiers' vineyards is on some of the best limestone soils in the area

Winemaking: Late harvested grapes are fermented using indigenous yeasts and aged in oak barrels before being bottles without filtration

ABV: 14% (a side effect of the late harvest)

Tasting Note
A dark ruby colour with a red rim. Perfumed and poised on the nose with red fruits and spice. The palate is full and quite thick - a little viscous - but with acidity and tannin that balances this with ease. Concentrated blackberry, redcurrant and blueberry fruits with hints of strawberry, dark chocolate and a touch of violet. Superbly made and with no mention of the 'green' character which, for me, ruins many Cabernet Francs

Cellaring
Definitely one to buy a case of and taste regularly, watching its development as I think it will age gracefully

If you like this why not try... , a superb value alternative - or watch out for some new Pomerol, coming soon, which has quite a high percentage of Cab Franc in the blend (oh, and if you ever spot any Sperino 'Il Bandit', a Vin de Table from Northern Italy which retails for about £80, snap it up - it's superb!)
