Tasted November 2009

Ever since I first visited this shop as a customer I was intrigued by these rather odd looking bottles from Chile. Why I never drank one, especially considering that South America was often my first port of call, is a mystery. I've had this in my cellar for a while now and I tried it on a whim. What I found was a charming wine, full of crowd-pleasing fruit but with a roundness and complexity that belies both its price and that odd looking bottle!

N.B. It seems as if I've been deceived! The parcels of different grape varieties in the wine are bound to add to the aforementioned complexity, but it is still an impressive, syrah-eal wine (sorry...)

Tasted November 2009

Grape Varieties: 85% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 2% Malbec.

Region: Maipo Valley, Chile

Soil:
Piedmont soils of the Coastal Mountain range: granite origin and clay loam texture. South exposure.

Winemaking: Cold maceration for 5 days at 8ºC. Fermentation at 26ºC with selected yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Aged 60 % in French and American oak barrels and 40 % in stainless steel tanks for 8 months.

ABV: 13% (I believe the bottle however, says 14%?) [Let's stick to what the bottle says, Kate.]

Tasting Note
A really beautiful black tar colour in the centre, only just fading to a dark-purple at the rim. The nose is invitingly warm with plenty of spice and mocha intermingling with your expected ripe plum, cherry and blackberry notes, finished by a floral touch. It is a big wine (though not too big), quite alcoholic and with big and grainy tannins that seem to crumble in the mouth for a velvety and almost creamy texture.
More plum and blackcurrant on the palate with a hint of vanilla.
Delicious, and what's more - outstanding value. Awesome with a nice warming winter curry.

Cellaring

I'd say this wine wasn't particularly designed for cellaring but would probably improve for a couple of years.

If you like this, why not try... Shaw and Smith Shiraz.
This is from a cooler climate with creates quite a unique expression of the shiraz grape. Worth a go, especially if you're not into overdone and over-ripe Aussie Shiraz.
