Tasted December 2008
Stranveld is the most southerly winery in South Africa, located on Cape Aguilas in the wine region of Elim. When I first tasted this wine back in the Autumn I have to say that I was a little underwhelmed. However, I thought I'd better give it a second chance, and was really rather pleased that I did!
For real wine geek, in-depth info, visit their detailed site at http://www.firstsighting.co.za/index.htm You can even see weather reports for their vineyard! | |

Tasting Note A savoury/spicy nose (no hint of Viog though, and I'm usually quite adept at spotting it) with dark plum, cooked blueberry, white pepper and a distinctive parma ham character. The palate is well structured - taut but not tight - and all-in this is a very well made wine and a clear step away from either the French or Australian models. This would be absolutely amazing with Venison.
Cellaring This has some life in it yet, and could reward careful ageing for up to 5 years.
If you like this, why not try
Phileo Shiraz is an old favourite but for old-world class get a load of Robert Niero's Cote Rotie (I also tried a very expensive Spanish Shiraz at a tasting recently which was almost never-ending in length!)
