Bodegas Riojanas, Gran Albina 2004

Bodegas Riojanas, Gran Albina 2004

£19.99

This 'Alte Expression' Rioja is made from hand-selected grapes and gets 24 months in new American oak caskes, creating an intense, concentrated and very modern style of red wine with chewy tannins and opulent fruits. Unlike traditional riojas, which are ready when released (although some can be kept), this needs a few years bottle age to reveal its true glory

Andrew Pirie PhD was Australia's first doctor of viticulture and the founder of Pipers Brook vineyard in Tasmania. The Tamar Valley shares many of the characteristics of Burgundy and New Zealand and is therefore perfect pinot country! South is Pirie's entry level range; light, fruit-driven wines with a commitment to purity and freshness. The South pinot is handled with minimal oak and should be drunk young. Try it slightly chilled!

Grapes: 100% Pinot Noir

Region: Tamar Valley, Tasmania

Winemaking: Andrew Pirie's philosophy is that the best wines are made in the vineyard. We would have to agree! Cool climate, minimal intervention and rigorous clonal/fruit selection have combined to produce a wine that could only be from Tasmania.

ABV: 13.5%

Tasting Note
Deeply coloured with perfumed raspberry and red cherry fruit on the nose, with a touch of vanilla. On the palate, morello cherry and almond with a hint of spice. Perfect with a simple chicken or salmon dish.

If you like this why not try... the 2007 Delta Vineyards Pinot Noir(£11.49) from New Zealand's Marlborough region - a similar up-front, fruity and easy drinking style of pinot. Or the great value Anakena Pinot Noir 2007 from Chile at the staggeringly low price of £6.99. How much….?
