Bodegas Riojanas, Gran Albina 2004

Bodegas Riojanas, Gran Albina 2004

£19.99

This 'Alte Expression' Rioja is made from hand-selected grapes and gets 24 months in new American oak caskes, creating an intense, concentrated and very modern style of red wine with chewy tannins and opulent fruits. Unlike traditional riojas, which are ready when released (although some can be kept), this needs a few years bottle age to reveal its true glory

Bodegas Riojanas, Monte Real Gran Reserva 1998

Bodegas Riojanas, Monte Real Gran Reserva 1998

Pieropan, Soave La Rocca 2005

Online Catalogue | Sipped and Savoured |  Pieropan, Soave La Rocca 2005

Tasted May 2008 Pieropan is not only one of the most established producers in the North East of Italy but also one of the finest, and La Rocca is surely the pinnacle of his art. The key to success is the fine art of vineyard management, and the careful vinification of the grapes to allow the site characteristics to shine through. The grapes for La Rocca are harvested so late that Pieropan had to erect a fence around the vineyard to stop people picking grapes they assumed were unwanted!

Grape: 100% Garganega

Region: Soave, North East Italy

Soil Type: La Rocca is unusual in that it is a tower of limestone amongst a sea of basalt

Winemaking: Nino belives that barriques are too powerful for the delicate Garganega, so ages the wine in 500l used casks.

ABV: 13%

Tasting Note: Rich yet delicate and beautifully balance, La Rocca has an ethereal quality with blossom and honeyed fruit aromas. The wine feels creamy in the mouth with buttery vanilla, coconut and pineapple accented with hints of wild flowers and given structure by an excellent acidity. Hints of dried apple and nuts on the never-ending finish round of a wine which shows off the skill of a truly mature winemaking hand

Cellaring
Drinking beautifully now but has enough about it to keep a couple of years

If you like thus, why not try…
it may seem obvious, but Pra's Soave Monte Grande 2005 is a great comparison.
