Tasted September 2008
I tasted this at a trade tasting, more out of interest than any great desire to find a £20 Malbec for the shop. As you may guess, I was so impressed I just had to order some in - and it wasn't until after I'd made this decision that I found out that the wine won a Trophy in this year's Decanter World Wine Awards. Made in a tiny boutique winery from grapes grown on 35 year old vines in vineyards at the incredible altitude of 1,100m, this really is something a little bit special!

Tasting Note This really is a big, rich and concentrated wine with a powerful nose and piles and piles of dark fruits, vanilla and spice. Despite this power the palate is finely balanced, and the oak managed just right to combine with rather than overpower the fruit. Layer after layer of smooth flavours hits the mouth, and I struggled to taste any other wines for quite some time afterwards, so persistent is the finish!
Cellaring Although I greatly enjoyed this (it's worth noting that the wine was decanted some time before I tasted), this has a minimum of 10 years ahead of it, possibly even more. The level of complexity suggests that leaving this a little while may be very rewarding!
If you like this, why not try... although Argentina is the home of Malbec, I'd go for Vanya Cullen's 'Mangan', a Malbec-heavy blend from Western Australia. |
