Bodegas Riojanas, Gran Albina 2004

£19.99

This 'Alte Expression' Rioja is made from hand-selected grapes and gets 24 months in new American oak caskes, creating an intense, concentrated and very modern style of red wine with chewy tannins and opulent fruits. Unlike traditional riojas, which are ready when released (although some can be kept), this needs a few years bottle age to reveal its true glory

We have been banging on for a number of years that sherry is ace and this wonderful wine is confirmation of that. Lustau is one of the most prominent producers of sherry and offers an extensive range of wonderful fortified wines. Oloroso is a style, the wine (which is fortified after fermentation) is left exposed to the air within a system which is basically fractional blending of wines of all different ages (known as the solera system)

Grapes: Palomino Fino

Region: Jerez, Spain

Soil Type: Albariza - chalky

Winemaking: As above really, fermentation of fairly bland acidic grapes then fortification with high volume grape spirit. The character comes from ageing the wine in the solera system. For commercial purposes Oloroso sherries are often sweetened with Pedro Ximenez ie cream sherry but not this one so you're left with a dry, (with just a few hints of sweetness) complex and nutty wine.

ABV: 20%

Tasting Note
Deep amber in colour with a complex nutty nose. Rich and concentrated on the palate with dried fruit, bitter chocolate, orange peel and a rich nutty finish. A great aperitif but could be matched with food - maybe a rich chicken dish or blue cheese. Serve at room temperature.

Cellaring
Ready to drink but you could keep for years (although it won't improve)

If you like this, why not try....ooh there are a whole host of other sherries you could dabble with, if you like drier styles try our Almancenista Range, or Papirusa Manzanilla from Sanlucar de Barrameda which has a bit more of a salty tang.
