Well, that's a bit of a mouthful! Let me explain: The producer is Josef Leitz, the grape is Riesling and the wine is a single vineyard wine from the Magdalenenkreuz vineyard in the town of Rudesheim. It's late harvested and retains a bit of residual suger. They like to explain things properly in Germany! Jancis Robinson calls Johannes Leitz 'one of the absolute superstars, not just of the Rheingau, but of German wine' so I thought I'd better see what all the fuss (and the writing on the label) is about…

Tasted January 2009

Grape: 100% Riesling

Region: Rheingau, Germany

Winemaking: This wine is made in the vineyard, with minimal intervention at the fermentation stage and no oak ageing.

ABV: 8%

Tasting Note
This is textbook Spatlese. There's a tingle of sugar on the tip of the tongue, but the wine is fresh and lively with great acidity and a delightfully light touch. White blossom and lime on the nose, with a medium bodied palate of apples and lime cordial with a real mineral character. Really very good, and would be delicious with Japanese food, even sushi.

Cellaring
I'd veer towards drinking this now - it will keep for a while but I don't think it will get any better.

If you like this, why not try…. A truly dry version such as Louis Guntrum, Riesling Kabinett, or Grosset's bell-clear, glacial Polish Hill.
