Carpentiere - Castel del Monte 'Come d'Incanto' 2007
£11.00
This is the only white wine in the world made from the Nero di Troia grape. A bold but successful move from this innovative Puglian winery, resulting in a full bodied wine, full of tropical fruits when first breached, but opening out into something spicey and green with stewed gooseberries, ginger and a hint of something herbal - fresh tobacco?

Jean-Philippe Fichet, Bourgogne Rouge 2002
Online Catalogue | Sipped and Savoured | Jean-Philippe Fichet, Bourgogne Rouge 2002
 | Mature burgundy is most definitely my thing but you don't see too many affordable examples of 2002 - a great year in Burgundy. So I thought this was a steal at the price. Monsieur Fichet is known mostly for his Meursault (check out our 2001 Les Chevalieres) but he uses only his best grapes for the Bourgogne Rouge. Pulling the cork on a wine with bottle age is always exciting and this didn't let me down! I decanted half the bottle and poured from the other half to see how the wine changed with extended aeration, as some old wines change rapidly on contact with air. Now there's a geeky wine fact for you! You should just sit back, drink and enjoy! |

Tasting Note As a burgundy geek I was really looking forward to this, so with trepidation I pulled the cork, praying that the wine was still fresh. And it was! Quite earthy on the nose with hints of classic damp woodland, a gamey farmyardyness (is that an actual word?) and black cherries. On the palate, strawberry and raspberry fruit, a suggestion of damp leaves and a touch of vanilla on the long, stylish finish. Bring on the next bottle!
Cellaring As this wine is already six years old you should drink now.
If You Like.. If earthy burgundy is your thing then try the Pirie Estate Pinot Noir from Tasmania (£14.99) or, back in Burgundy, Francois Raquillet's Mercurey Old Vines 2004 (£15.99) has perfume, depth and class.
