Carpentiere - Castel del Monte 'Come d'Incanto' 2007

£11.00

This is the only white wine in the world made from the Nero di Troia grape. A bold but successful move from this innovative Puglian winery, resulting in a full bodied wine, full of tropical fruits when first breached, but opening out into something spicey and green with stewed gooseberries, ginger and a hint of something herbal - fresh tobacco?

Jacquesson Brut Cuvee 731 N.V.

Online Catalogue | Sipped and Savoured |  Jacquesson Brut Cuvee 731 N.V.

Tasted May 2008 Ok, so I pushed the yacht out a bit with this one but life is too short not to drink good champagne! Jacquesson may not be as famous as Moet, Taittinger or Laurent-Perrier but their non vintage numbered cuvees are light years ahead of the opposition both in terms of quality and value. The grapes from this small family-run house only come from Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites, yields are exceptionally low and the base wine is barrel fermented for added complexity and weight. This is not light, quaffable party-style fizz but thoughtful, rich and opulent champagne that will benefit from several years in the cellar. The only problem is what to drink once it's gone!

Grapes 52% Chardonnay, 31% Pinot Meunier, 17% Pinot Noir

Region Champagne, France

Soil Type Limestone soils.

Winemaking Only grapes from Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites are used here. The base wine for the 731 cuvee came from the exceptional 2002 vintage.

ABV 12%

Tasting Note The nose is full, powerful and packed with rich, creamy fruit flavours. The bubbles are very fine and persistent - almost always a sign of a high class champagne. The palate has plenty of weight with brioche, vanilla and more than a hint of creaminess. Lovely on it's own but perfect with a spankingly fresh crab!

Cellaring As every champagne aficionado knows, cellaring a good non vintage cuvee for a few years often pays dividends with a more complex and honeyed wine. So keep it for three or four years if you can resist it that long!

If You Like.. As this is a rich, Chardonnay-dominated blend, I would suggest the Gosset Grande Reserve N.V. (£34.49) - another rich full-on style for those of you who like your champers a bit feisty. Or try the Montaudon Brut Millesime 2000 (£26.99) for a great value vintage fizz.
