Bodegas Riojanas, Gran Albina 2004

Bodegas Riojanas, Gran Albina 2004

£19.99

This 'Alte Expression' Rioja is made from hand-selected grapes and gets 24 months in new American oak caskes, creating an intense, concentrated and very modern style of red wine with chewy tannins and opulent fruits. Unlike traditional riojas, which are ready when released (although some can be kept), this needs a few years bottle age to reveal its true glory

Bodegas Riojanas, Monte Real Gran Reserva 1998

Reinhard Lowenstein is one of the finest winemakers in the Mosel, his 12 hectares of vineyards are situated on very steep terraces of the Terrassemosel that are perfectly angled to the low sun. This unusually warm microclimate together with a long ripening period and low yields results in the highest quality fruit. His wines are stylistically very different to the 'classic' Mosel Kabinetts and Spatlesen, see below for his winemaking techniques

Grapes: 100% Riesling

Region: Mosel, Germany.

Soil Type:
Slate

Winemaking:
The winemaking approach is basically 'low intervention'. Reinhard ferments his wine to complete dryness using barrel ageing to develop texture then he labels his wines according to soil type.

ABV: 12.5%

Tasting Note
Light gold in colour with a few legs. Lots of complexity on the nose, stone fruits, white blossom, orange peel with slight hints of petrol characters. The palate is really interesting as it's reasonably full with honeysuckle and acacia flavours yet at the same time there is good definition and a tight underlying minerality. Long finish.

Cellaring
Well this is 2004 so it's drinking nicely now however good Riesling will age well and I think it could certainly go another couple of years.

If you like this, why not try...Van Volxem, Saar Riesling, a fatter style of Riesling from the nearby Saar valley
