Bodegas Riojanas, Gran Albina 2004
£19.99
This 'Alte Expression' Rioja is made from hand-selected grapes and gets 24 months in new American oak caskes, creating an intense, concentrated and very modern style of red wine with chewy tannins and opulent fruits. Unlike traditional riojas, which are ready when released (although some can be kept), this needs a few years bottle age to reveal its true glory

Bodegas Riojanas, Monte Real Gran Reserva 1998
£18.49
Unusually for Rioja, this is a single vineyard wine. The Rioja Alta fruit gives extra weight and body to this smoky, spicy wine, which is ready to drink but should keep in your cellar a while if you like

Jeffrey Grosset is an Aussie winemaking legend, having pioneered the vine in Clare Valley, South Australia and continuing to make some of the regions top wines each year. He produces six wines - Chardonnay, Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, 'Gaia' (a Bordeaux blend) and two single vineyard Rieslings - this and the fatter but initially more austere Watervale. |

Tasting Note This vintage is still relatively young, but is already a stunning glass of wine. A bit flat when initially opened, but blossoms with time in the glass - perhaps worth decanting. The nose is lime fruit driven, but is starting to show signs of petrol. Glacial minerality is the order of the day on the palate, which is medium bodied and a touch oily, with sweet lime and lemon notes, fantastic, mouthwatering acidity and orange blossom overtones, all rounded off by a long finish which hints at sherbet.
Cellaring Strictly speaking, this is not yet at its peak, but I loved it anyway. Buy a case and drink a bottle once a year for the next 10 (with two to spare) and you'll see how this beautiful wine develops for yourself.
If you like this, why not try.....Mesh, Riesling 2006 A joint venture between Jeffey Grosset and Martin Hill Smith in Eden valley, this is more forward and lush than Polish hill, but really gets me going!
