Tasted April 2009
The last of my triumvirate of tasting notes made at Vinitaly, this is a wine I first tasted with Kate at a tasting in February and was very pleased to see that it was just as good in Italy as it was in Manchester! Giuseppe believes in allowing the vineyards to speak for themselves, so uses a non-interventionist style of winemaking to create an elegant, almost delicate style of Barolo which is anathema to the heavy, over-barriqued styles available elsewhere. As a result, the wines are approachable when young, especially this wine, which is made from the fruit of younger vines than his single vineyard 'Bricco della Viole'. Just as it was in Tuscany, 2004 was a near perfect vintage in Piedmont. | |

Tasting Note This is SO perfumed, it leaps out of the glass at you with an almost floral, violet character and hints of truffe. The fruit on the palate is juicy and fresh with cherry and red fruits (strawberries even) balanced with crunchy acidity. Quite brilliant.
Cellaring Only just released, this will keep for many many years, and old Nebbiolo is just delicious
If you like this, why not try...Well, this isn't cheap, so Giuseppe makes a Langhe Nebbiolo 2006 which is a great value example of the Nebbiolo grape variety. Alternatively I think we've got a bottle of Poderi Colla's Barbaresco Roncaglie 1997 knocking around somewhere! |
