Bodegas Riojanas, Gran Albina 2004

Bodegas Riojanas, Gran Albina 2004

£19.99

This 'Alte Expression' Rioja is made from hand-selected grapes and gets 24 months in new American oak caskes, creating an intense, concentrated and very modern style of red wine with chewy tannins and opulent fruits. Unlike traditional riojas, which are ready when released (although some can be kept), this needs a few years bottle age to reveal its true glory

Bodegas Riojanas, Monte Real Gran Reserva 1998

Franz Haas, Traminer Aromatico 2005

Tasted May 2008
The Haas family has been growing grapes in the Alto Adige in Northern Italy for generations. But it is only with Franz that they have started to produce and bottle quality wines. Traminer Aromatico is also known Gewurztraminer, Gewurz means spice but wines made from this grape tend to be intensely aromatic and medium to full bodied.

Grapes 100% Traminer Aromatico

Region Alto Adige, Italy

Winemaking Climate is Mediterranean up here - the summers are very hot and the winters are quite cold - there is no water nearby to moderate temperatures. The grapes for this wine are grown in three different vineyard sites at 400 - 700 metres above sea level. Part of the blend is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and part in chestnut wood barrels (which remains on its lees for several months after bottling - this gives the wine a real creaminess).

ABV 14%

Tasting Note Straw yellow in colour. On the nose it has all the characteristics you could wish for from this grape - roses, cloves and lychees. On the palate it's full bodied with a lovely rich mouthfeel and a slightly nutty finish.
