Tasted February 2009

When Kate ordered samples from a supplier to show to one of our new wholesale accounts (The Art of Tea in Didsbury), they threw a bottle of this in as well. We sent it off to Ryan and co. who raved about it so much that I thought I'd better get a piece of the action! I think this may become a bit of a favourite at Reserve (actually it's already become a favourite with a couple of customers), and to re-inforce its great value for money, it consistently gains 89 points or more in the Wine Advocate - a great acheivement for a wine under a tenner!
Tasted February 2009

Grapes: 50% Prieto Picudo, 35% Tempranillo, 5% Merlot. Prieto Picudo is native to the region and is more commonly used to make Rose wines

Region:
Castilla y Leon, which is a huge VdT (Spanish equivalent of Vin de Pays) so that's not much help. The vineyards are to the north west of the region, towards Galicia

Soil Type: Stony red alluvial soils

Winemaking: Cool maceration and fermentation, followed by pumping over and then 4 months in French oak

ABV: 14%

Tasting Note
A dark maroon colour with dark fruits, sweet oak, cedar and spice on the nose. THe palate is silky and well balanced with a refreshing acidity to counteract the relatively high alcohol content. The flavours are powerful but the wine is medium bodied with dark cherry and espresso flavours. It perhaps lacks a little on the mid palate, but hey, it's £8!

Cellaring
No need to keep this - it's spot on. Try with spiced lamb, even a curry.

If you like this, why not try...stick to Spain and head for Ribera del Duero. Rivola shoudl be right up your street.
