Carpentiere - Castel del Monte 'Come d'Incanto' 2007
£11.00
This is the only white wine in the world made from the Nero di Troia grape. A bold but successful move from this innovative Puglian winery, resulting in a full bodied wine, full of tropical fruits when first breached, but opening out into something spicey and green with stewed gooseberries, ginger and a hint of something herbal - fresh tobacco?

Daniel Rion, Vosne Romanee, Les Beaux Monts 1999

 | I hosted a tasting for a corporate client last week and the focus was Burgundy v's New Zealand. Happy Days - we tasted some great wines, all of which showed exceptionally well. The second to last wine of the evening was the above so this is my choice this week. Vosne Romanee is a village in the Cotes de Nuits and produces some of the finest red wines in Burgundy. Les Beaux Monts is a premier cru site in the North of the appellation. Created in 1955 by Daniel Rion, this is a family run estate (his sons joined him in the late 1970s) They now own vineyard sites in 18 different Burgundy appellations.

Tasting Note: Cherry, violets, blackcurrants and cedar on the nose. Soft silky tannins, good acidity and concentration of fruit on the palate, it shows some signs of development with earthy aromas and truffles. Well balanced with a complex intensity and a real finesse.
Cellaring: 1999 was an excellent vintage for red Burgundy, the wine is most definitely developing so you could drink it now but it will cellar in the medium term.
If you like this, why not try
A cheaper option that still displays bright red fruits alongside a more vegetal earthiness is the J.P Fichet, Bourgogne Rouge (2002) - I think we may have even written a Select, Sipped and Savoured for this wine already so take a look.
