I'm always banging on to anyone who will listen about how great English sparkling wines are, so I though it was about time i put my money where my mouth is and wrote a decent tasting note about one.
Chapel Down are one of southern England's larger (and best) wineries, and they make quite a range of still wines as well as their sparklers. As well as growing their own grapes on the Tenterden Estate in Sussex, they make wines with grapes they buy in from across the area and they were the first English winery to win a gold medal at the International Wine Challenge for sparkling wine. This should be good then!

Grape Varieties: Rivaner, Reichensteiner, Pinot Noir

Region: Kent, England

Soil Type: Soil is what makes English sparkling wine so unique. The vineyards in the South East are planted on the same seam of limestone which crops up again on the other side of the channel in Champagne.

Winemaking: The sparkling wines are made in the same way as champagne, with a base wine (a portion of which is matured in french and american barriques) refermented in the bottle and aged on its lees for three years before riddling and disgorgement.

ABV:
12%

Tasting Note
Very pale in colour, this fizz is floral and fruity on the nose with biscuity citrus flavours in the mouth and accacia on the finish with a touch of warm honey and pleasant. Whilst this isn't going to knock the likes of Krug off their perch, it is excellent value for money and a great alternative to champers if you're not feeling that flush!

Cellaring
I'd be tempted to keep a bottle of this just to see if it broadens out and develops with bottle age, but essentially it's ready to drink

If you like this, why not try...some of their still wines. The English Rose is a shop favourite, but I think that the Tenterden Estate Bacchus Reserve is their strongest still wine, and a great place to start.
