Bodegas Riojanas, Gran Albina 2004

Bodegas Riojanas, Gran Albina 2004

£19.99

This 'Alte Expression' Rioja is made from hand-selected grapes and gets 24 months in new American oak caskes, creating an intense, concentrated and very modern style of red wine with chewy tannins and opulent fruits. Unlike traditional riojas, which are ready when released (although some can be kept), this needs a few years bottle age to reveal its true glory

Bodegas Riojanas, Monte Real Gran Reserva 1998

Unusually for Rioja, this is a single vineyard wine. The Rioja Alta fruit gives extra weight and body to this smoky, spicy wine, which is ready to drink but should keep in your cellar a while if you like

Well Randall Grahm is our wine hero this week so it seems fitting that I tasted this wine last week (when celebrating the birth of Polly - congrats Mark & Katy). This winery produces a stunning range of wines and Grahm is known as the Rhone ranger for his dedicated work with Rhone and Provencal varieties in California. The vineyard that produces the grapes for this specific wine is farmed biodynamically and Randall is a firm believer that this adds depth & complexity to the wines.

Grapes: 100% Moscato Giallo

Region: Monterey County, California

Soil Type: Sandy clay

Winemaking: Minimal intervention (I would imagine), I don't have the actual technical details but I would say stainless steel fermentation, no malo, no oak.

ABV:
12.5%

Tasting Note
Perfumed and powerfully aromatic. It has that really grapey character that is often associated with Muscat. The palate treats you to floral notes, jasmine & ripe melons. Slightly off dry. I drank it as an aperitif and it was great to taste something different - it's a wine that makes you think a little. If you fancy it with food match it with Thai curries…chillies, ginger and that sort of jazz.

Cellaring
Drinking well now not really a keeper.

If you like this, why not try…..Hunawihr Gewurztraminer - not quite the same i.e. different grape but still aromatic and also great with Asian food.
