Tasted September 2009
This was a surprise hit in July at our Summer Fair - none of us had tasted it, or in fact knew anything about it, but it went down very well and your comments suggested it is very good value for money! Turns out that Alain Brumont may well be South West France's greatest winemaker, and he specialises in Madiran (Chateau Montus is his) and Pacherenc - a white wine from the region which is usually sweet. With this sort of form, I thought I'd better check out his wines, and yesterday the perfect opportunity arose at a tasting in London. Chateau Montus, by the way, is outstanding and on its way to the Reserve shelves, and I also tried his sweeties... | |

Grape Variety: 100% Petit Manseng
Region: Pacherenc du Vic Bilh, South West France
Harvesting: Brumont makes 3 sweet wines from these vineyards, harvested at different times: Vendemiaire is harvested in October, Brumaire in November and Frimaire in December. In 2006, this wine was harvested on the 22nd November - very late!
ABV: 13.5% |

Tasting Note The nose is very mineral and has hints of botrytis must. Much less agressively sweet than I'd expected for a late harvest wine - despite a whopping 120g of residual sugar - a testament to the quality of the wine. Orange peel, apricot and marmalade with an astoundingly long and fresh finish.
Cellaring I actually think this needs a little time to open out completely, and will cellar for over a decade - the (very wine-geeky) back label states that it develops truffle aromas with 15 years in the bottle
If you like this, why not try... a dry white from the South West: Camin Larredya, Jurancon Sec. Made with Gros as well as Petit Manseng, this is a real beauty. |
