2005 Burgundy

Benjamin Leroux took over at this domaine in 1999 and quickly proved that he was the right man for the job. In addition to the brilliance of the wines he has produced since his first vintage he has also gradually introduced a biodynamic regime to ensure constantly improving fruit quality. The Clos des Epeneaux is now worked by horses, while various fruit trees, roses and other plants have been introduced along the surrounding walls as a natural habitat for the population of crucial insects such as butterflies and bees. Yields are kept to a punishingly low 27 hl/ha.

The first vintage of straight Volnay follows the recent purchase of a hectare of superbly sited vineyard. The intense, tight, bright cherry fruit flavours combine with firm yet silky tannins culminating in an intensely elegant finish. Brilliantly put together for both short and long term enjoyment. Drink 2009 to 2016.

Over the last year Patrice has been fortunate enough to buy 3 hectares of Premier Cru Nuits St Georges vineyards directly opposite his house: Terres Blanches which is planted to Chardonnay (unlike Pinot Blanc at neighbouring Domaine Daniel Rion); Clos St Marc which will be available next year; and an additional section of Argillières. Patrice is thrilled with the quality of his 2005s and is confident that their quality surpasses any thing he has made before including 1990, 1999 and 2002.

A real core of intense blackberry and dark fruits with a touch of oak. The palate displays the usual great class, purity and generous texture of Argillières with an extra level of vibrancy and balance in 2005. Absolute class. Drink 2011 to 2022
